Top 5 tips to Controlling Your Mental Health!

“Self-care is how you get your power back.”

 

The first time I experienced a decline in my mental health was almost 2-1/2 years ago. I was going through a breakup, I wasn’t working and I felt everything was falling apart around me. I spent 2016 doing everything I could to get myself back up but, by the end, I was exhausted and I barely recall much from that year.

I spent 2017 in a mix of doing things right and splurging. I took 95% of the year off from the gym, ate whatever I wanted, within moderation, did new things and re-found some old loves.

Now here we are nearly half way through 2018 and I have finally learned the importance of choosing YOU over ANYTHING. There is no one person more important on this Earth than you and your well-being. Below I am sharing with you my 5 tips to helping get your mind right!

 

 

  • Find A Hobby

 

This has been SO important for me. My work keeps me pretty busy 6+ months out of the year so, I have to have something else I can do that helps keep me focused or relaxed. My blog is my biggest hobby but I also love taking photos, taking a class of some kind or, simply reading a book or watching a new TV series. Anything that allows you to escape and enjoy the moment.

 

 

  • Take Control of Your Health

 

Whenever my anxiety is acting up, it takes a toll on my mind and body. I have found eating certain foods, or nixing certain foods, has helped give me a bit of ease. Coffee, as much as I love it, sometimes I have to go a week or so without. Maintaining that balance, along with getting your body moving, will help cleanse your mind. Also, SLEEP!! Get as much sleep as your body needs. You will thank yourself later!

 

 

  • Take a Vacation

 

This one can be a bit of a stretch. I know it is for me. However, I have found that every time I am able to get a break from everything, I come back feeling refreshed. Even if it is just a day or weekend out of the city you call home, it can make a big difference. I love going anywhere that has a beach or, simply to a cabin up North.

 

 

  • Have a YOU Day

 

Every now and then, we all need a day where it is just you. Now, this might worry some because you don’t want to be alone or stuck in your head all day. Trust me on this… Waking up, going for a walk, getting coffee, doing what you want on your own timeline and spending a day just doing what you want and need can make a huge difference. I like to end these days with a bath, a face mask and a good book.

 

 

  • Remember, it IS all about YOU

 

I am one of those people who thrives on taking care of others. I am always making sure everyone around me is okay that I forget about myself. The way I make sure to make time for me is by simply saying “no.” Say no to something you really don’t want to do, a night out, a night in, etc. Learning the power of saying no has changed my life. I know it will change yours.

 

Taking care of ourselves doesn’t come easy to a lot of us. We are so focused on the things we are working on and working towards, that we forget about the things working against us. These are just 5 of the things I have learned over the last 2-1/2 years. There are so many more things you can do. Just as long as you remember to focus on YOU and do YOU, you will be unstoppable.
