One Thing in Common

Do you know a child that is experiencing or has experienced ear infections, colic, constipation, asthma, ADD, ADHD, sensory challenges, or Autism?

What is the one thing that all these things have in common?

They are all common to many children in the United States?

Yes.

20-25% of babies (2 weeks to 3 months) experience colic

Almost 14% of children 0-14 years old experience asthma

10.2% of children diagnosed with ADHD (6.1% in 1997-1998)

1 in 36 children are diagnosed with Autism (2-4 per 10,000 in 1960’s/ 70’s & 6-7 per 1,000 in 2002)

Although, there is still something else that all these health challenges have in common.

If you look at ALL these health challenges that I have listed and you whittle them down to their “bare bones,” the piece at the very foundation, it is the nervous system.

I know this may sound crazy to some, but I promise you that it is true

All these challenges have their foundation in a nervous system that is over stimulated, chronically stressed, and sympathetic dominant (fight or flight).

In this state, your kiddos nervous system is literally moving resources from the immune system, GI, higher brain centers, and putting them into the muscles to prepare them to fight or run away.

Crazy, right?

Think about it like running a treadmill.

You are going to alternate between all out sprints and an easy jog. The jog is something you can do for a long period of time without much strain (or stress) and the sprint is as fast as you can go for 10-20 sec. The sprint is maximum strain (or stress) on you.

The act of moving back and forth between the two speeds is very good for your body. Challenging it to adapt to the changes in speed repeatedly. Doing it more often you will start to gain a multitude of health benefits because you are increasing the adaptability of your cardiovascular system.

Your child’s nervous system works the same way.

When functioning optimally, it spends most of its time functioning in a parasympathetic, or balanced state. With the ability to move between stress and balance easily. Another way to say it is that it has high levels of adaptability.

Higher levels of adaptability are synonymous with higher levels of health.

When you are sprinting, how concerned do you think your body is with your immune system, your GI, or your higher brain function?

Zilch. Zero. Nada.

Your body is solely focused on keeping you moving. Sprinting as fast as you can.

In an over stimulated, chronically stressed, sympathetic dominant state your child’s nervous system functions the same way.

It is not concerned with building/creating/ maintaining a healthy immune system, GI tract, or an optimally functioning brain because it is too busy fueling the fight or flight response.

It will continue to act like this until it is given the opportunity to create a shift to a parasympathetic state. Better known as the rest and digest side of the nervous system.

In this place your child’s nervous system can boost immune function, move nutrients through the GI tract, absorb those nutrients, and begin to increase the function of the higher brain centers (goal directed tasks, critical thinking, regulate emotion, and social awareness to name a few).

This is the hands down, no questions asked, biggest impact chiropractic care has on anyone.

Especially kids!

Checking and adjusting your child’s spine directly impacts their nervous system by allowing it to “slow down” and return to a more balanced state (aka parasympathetic).

Therefore, allowing your child to chance to experience higher and higher levels of health.

Increased spinal function = Increased brain function = Increased health
